Puppy Training

Puppy Training & Housebreaking Basics

Got a new puppy? The biggest favor you can do for him is to begin puppy training right away. Puppy training involves 2 parts, the first being housebreaking, frequently known as puppy potty training or housetraining. The phrase paper training or crate training refers to the specific activities related to housebreaking. The second and often neglected part of puppy training is collar and leash training.

Housebreaking is essentially potty or toilet training, i.e. teaching your puppy to soil only at designated places. You begin the process by putting your puppy in a spread out newspaper away from his sleeping place every morning when he awakes, before bed and after every meal. The idea here is to get your puppy used to soiling only on the newspapers. Hence, the term paper training.

Crate training can be used to effectively complement paper training. By confining puppies in dog crates, they will gradually understand that it is not appropriate to eliminate anywhere they want to. Most dogs like to keep their den clean, hence, it is unlikely that the puppy will soil inside the crate. However, you should not confine the puppy in the crates excessively without letting him up. Generally, puppies should not be confined for more than 2 to 3 hours without a potty break. As it grows older, you can extend it gradually up to a maximum of 6 hours. But do remember that the puppy must be allowed to eliminate after eating or playing!

Every time your puppy does correctly according to your puppy training, you can reward him with a puppy dog toys or dog treats. And if he messed up, a firm "No" is often enough. But all scoldings must directly follow the mistakes or else the puppy will not be able to connect to it.

If you puppy is less than 3 months old, do not expect fast results from your puppy training. The golden rule in paper or crate training is to exercise a lot of patience as a lot of puppies are unable to control their bladder well when they are young.

Collar & Leash Training

Most puppies resent even a collar, let alone a leash. When you first put on a collar, soothe your puppy regularly and soon, he will get used to it. Once he is comfortable with a collar, put the leash on and carry him from his crate to outside. When outside, put him on the ground and he is likely to back to him crate. Go with him and correct him along the way and soon, he will come and go in the direction you desire.

Here's a list of important tips for puppy training:

  1. Leas training should never be performed on young puppies less than 2 months old.

  2. Puppy training sessions must be kept short for only about 15 minutes a day as puppies usually have short memories.

  3. The best time for puppy training is one hour before meal time as hungry dogs are easily motivated by edible dog treats.

  4. For puppy training beyond housebreaking like "sit" or "stand", dog treats will make your training easier and more effective.

  5. Patience and repetition is key to puppy training. Teach each command slowly and repeat them a few times daily for 2 to 3 weeks and you can expect some results.

  6. Dog toys can make a big difference in puppy training and development. But be sure to choose the ones that are puppy-safe!

  7. Once your puppy master a command, gradually reduce your dependency on dog treats to stimulate his response. (Note: dog treats can still be used to reward him.)

All puppies can be molded into a well-bred dog that everybody will love if
puppy training is carried out effectively from the start!
