Dog
Collars
The
different types of dog collars
With
so many different dog collars in the market, choosing the
right dog collar for your dog may not be an easy task. As
with dog breeds, there are no good or bad dog collars. Dog
collars selection depends greatly on the purpose of
buying a dog collar in the first place. Dog collars are
mainly used for controlling dogs and dog training purposes.
If all you want is a dog collar that allows you to attach a dog leash and a dog tag, normal dog collars will do the job. Though normal dog collars come in different designs (buckle, slip, metal, etc.) and textures (nylon, cotton or leather), they all will allow you to keep your dog on the leash. Just make sure that the dog collar is strong enough to keep your dog without injuring him.
However,
if you are looking for a dog training collar, chain choke
or slip collars are available. These dog training collars
work with a leash. When the leash is pulled, the dog collar
tightens to restrain the dog. This discomfort will signal
to the dog that his behavior is incorrect and gradually, the
dog's mistakes are corrected.
The setback of these dog collars is that they may be effective only with the owner's presence. Nevertheless, choke dog collars can provide quick correction and are affordable and easy relatively to use. Use dog training collars carefully to avoid injuring your dog and creating more dog training problems.
Next, you have shock collars, otherwise known as electronic dog collars or remote dog training collars. These are dog training collars that work by delivering electric discomfort to dogs to signal "correction" without using a leash. Dog shock collars usually come with multiple levels of electric intensity and can work remotely up to different range, from 100 meters up to 1 kilometer and beyond.
Shock collars have been proven effective in controlling dangerous dogs misbehaviors, such as chasing cars. These dog collars have also been adapted to be used as bark control collars or anti bark collars. As the name implies, bark control collars are used to stop dog barking, especially nuisance barking.
Though
more expensive and slightly more complex than ordinary dog
training collars, shock collars are highly effective. Because
they are "remote dog training collars", the dogs
will connect the punishment to the misbehavior and not the
owner giving the shock. Hence, dogs are likely to behave even
beyond dog training sessions and without the owner's presence.
All
these electronic dog training collars and bark control collars
are uncomfortable to dogs. Your dog must be introduced to
dog training collars gradually. Otherwise, dog training collars
might dampen instead of help your dog training efforts.
It's
important to remember that dog collar is only part of your
dog training exercise. You still need proper dog training
techniques, praise and affection, dog treats and toys for
successful dog obedience training. Dog collars are merely
dog training aids. A well trained dog is one that is obedient
even without a dog collar!
